Why and how to add long-range lights to your motorcycle?

On the road, motorcycles are very vulnerable vehicles. When overtaking or in the middle of an intersection, collisions most often occur due to a lack of visibility. To avoid these accidents, just make simple modifications. Fitting long-range lights or additional lights remains one of the best solutions.

Mounting long-range lights on a motorcycle: An effective solution

To improve their visibility, more and more motorcyclists are adding additional lights to their motorcycle. This solution is very effective, especially on curves, in foggy weather and at night . Wider, the vision thus covers the entire road.

By adding lights to a motorcycle, other road users can see the vehicle better . We must therefore not neglect the installation location. Installed offset from the others, the long-range lights will catch the eye of motorists. When you often ride at night or in overcast weather, it is useful to invest in this type of equipment. Generally, installing long-range lights on a motorcycle costs between 50 and 350 euros depending on the model .

Regulations in terms of adding long-range lights

The different modifications that a motorcyclist can carry out on their motorcycle are very regulated. In terms of motorcycle lighting, modification of the main light source is prohibited . However, it is not at all forbidden to add more. This addition is not obligatory, but above all recommended and obviously authorized. For the safety of other road users and in particular for your safety, you can absolutely add an LED headlight to your motorcycle .

The different types of long-range lights for motorcycles

In the field of motorcycle headlights, there are halogen lights, xenon lights and LED lights.

  • Halogen lights: these are the oldest and least efficient compared to other lights.
  • Xenon lights : these lights are the most powerful. Their larger size can, however, hamper other motorcycles on which aerodynamics are dominant.
  • LED lights are distinguished by their low power consumption as well as their superior longevity. Economical, high quality and durable, these lights are very popular.

Additional lights are also recommended by professional pilots who have had the opportunity to use them.

Connecting additional lights for motorcycles: what you need to know

You must correctly connect the long-range or additional lights to your motorcycle. However, you do not need advanced knowledge of electronics for this. Just try to understand the assembly process with the help of explanations and diagrams. But first of all, find out if your motorcycle has the capacity to support other additional lights.

To avoid, for example, encountering an error on your dashboard, you will need an additional box. What is commonly called “ error proof box ”. It is most often halogen lights that present this type of problem. With LED models, this problem is not likely to occur, because they consume much less.

Think about the design of your motorcycle

Check the color of your lighting carefully so as not to be disappointed . If you take halogen lights for example, their color will be closer to yellow. The additional LED lights, on the other hand, will tend towards white. If the lighting is yellow, the color between your low beam and your additional lights will be different. But it is possible to replace the halogen with LED lights or to use a White vision Xenon effect halogen bulb . Otherwise, you can always have halogen in low beam and LED in addition.

Finally, to extend the life of your additional lights, it is recommended to only turn them on once the engine is running . They must also be cleaned regularly to prevent various dirt from reducing their lighting power. Moreover, it is necessary to change the bulbs very often to maintain the lights . Making a change every year is strongly recommended.
