MTT 420RR: 10 Fun Facts About the World's Most Powerful Motorcycle

If you thought the Suzuki Hayabusa or Kawasaki H2R were fast, get ready to discover the turbine-powered MTT 420RR. Since 2000, this bike has held the Guinness World Record for the fastest motorcycle in the world. It's also the most expensive, with each one built to customer specifications, making them unique. Designed with one clear goal: straight-line speed, it excels in this area. Since 2017, the bike has been upgraded to the 420RR specification, where "RR" stands for "Race Ready."

10. The MTT 420RR is the only road-legal production motorcycle equipped with a turbine

Gasoline or electric? Forget them, what you need is a motorcycle powered by a Rolls-Royce Allison Model 250-C18 gas turbine, developing up to 420 horsepower! This engine, designed in the 1960s, still powers helicopters today. For the MTT 420RR, these turbines are reaching the end of their design life for aviation and are overhauled before being mounted on the motorcycle's chassis. The turbine drives the rear wheel via a two-speed gearbox, chain, and sprocket.

9. Is the MTT 420RR's 420 horsepower enough?

Is it really necessary to ask? While 1000cc superbikes produce 210 horsepower, MotoGP bikes with their 990cc engines around 300 horsepower, and the Kawasaki H2R around 320 horsepower, the MTT 420RR, with its 420 horsepower, is incredibly powerful for a motorcycle . Let's be honest, there are plenty of cars, fast ones at that, that make do with less power than the MTT 420RR. Its top speed is claimed at over 443 km/h, "faster than you'll ever dare go," according to MTT.

8. The MTT 420RR is the most expensive motorcycle in the world

Every MTT 420RR is built to the customer's specifications, so no two are alike. Naturally, this kind of customization doesn't come cheap, and MTT will supply you with a 420RR for the not-inconsiderable base price of around €230,000 , depending, of course, on the amount of carbon fiber you specify. Due to its rarity, it's not certain you'll be able to find a few for sale in local classifieds: they rarely come up for sale, and even when they do, don't expect to spend less than €140,000. It's no wonder the MTT 420RR is listed by Guinness World Records as the most expensive production motorcycle money can buy.

7. The MTT 420RR is pure speed

The MTT 420RR's raison d'être is speed: straight-line speed, of course. With all that power, not to mention the power delivery characteristics of a gas turbine engine designed for constant rpm and therefore constant power, it will be terribly useless on a circuit where there are those annoying things called corners. Its long chassis isn't ideal for a nimble motorcycle . No, the MTT 420RR was designed for one thing and one thing only: straight-line speed. You won't want to go to the store to get fresh milk: instead, head to your local drag strip or, preferably, the Bonneville Salt Flats, where there will at least be enough room to test the manufacturer's claimed top speed of 443 km/h.

6. The MTT 420RR has an automatic gearbox

As you cling to life and the horizon approaches very quickly, the last thing you need is to distract yourself by changing gears or anything of that nature. That's why the MTT 420RR is equipped with a two-speed automatic gearbox that takes the hassle out of Sunday morning drag racing.

5. The MTT 420RR is big, but not that heavy

One might imagine that a motorcycle this long - the wheelbase is 218 cm : for comparison, the Kawasaki H2R's wheelbase is 145 cm - and powered by a complex gas turbine engine would be extremely heavy, which would at least help it stay on the ground at over 400 km/h. But, in reality, the 420RR weighs a reasonable 227 kg (Kawasaki H2R - 215 kg). This is possible thanks to the use of aircraft-grade aluminum for the frame and a large amount of carbon fiber for the bodywork and wheels.

4. The MTT 420RR can run on tequila!

Okay, we don't expect any owner to start pouring their finest tequila into the gas tank of their 420RR, but it's comforting to know that, should you ever get caught short on your cross-country road trip in your 420RR and there's no gas station in sight, the Rolls-Royce gas turbine engine will run on just about any fuel . Ideally, that would be diesel fuel, but if not, your emergency ration of whiskey in your backpack will do the trick. In our opinion, it's more of a waste of good whiskey, but if it helps keep you going, who are we to judge?

3. The MTT 420RR comes with a lifetime engine warranty

These days, all cars and motorcycles come with a multi-year warranty, which is generous of manufacturers and a testament to the confidence they have in their products. The MTT 420RR, on the other hand, comes with a lifetime engine warranty. The thing is, the "lifetime" part of the warranty refers to the lifetime of the original owner! As MTT CEO Ted McIntyre wryly puts it, "Anyone who blows one of these things up and survives deserves a new engine." A comforting thought!

2. The MTT 420RR is equipped with a rear camera

When you're traveling at over 400km/h, few vehicles can keep up with you. So you don't need to know what's happening behind you, even if you don't have time to look in the rearview mirror! However, if two 420RRs meet on the road and a race begins, you can keep an eye on your opponent thanks to the rear-facing camera that displays their image on the dashboard, right in front of the rider.

1. Jay Leno also owns the MTT 420RR

Talk show host and car and motorcycle nut Jay Leno bought the very first MTT Y2K model in the early 2000s. "It really scares you, but it's a lot of fun," he said. "I have to say the Y2K Jet Bike is one of the sexiest motorcycles of all time. It's the most fun because it's a motorcycle... and a jet, and because it's the best motorcycle ever for shutting up Harley guys." Leno said that at a stoplight, the heat from the motorcycle's exhaust melted the bumper of the car behind him.
